Taking Action
Renouncing violence leads to action that heals harm and prevents suffering. Our faith is of two kinds: one aspect of faith is “that which” we believe. Chapter 2 is about Jesus, what we believe about Jesus. It is an example of that kind of faith. The second aspect is that “by which” we believe and that “by which” we act into our faith and be the Christ for others in our midst. Renouncing violence has a major obligation to change the forms and forces that cause violence. The example of writing this book is the second kind of faith “by which” we take action and use our faith as energy and strength.
It is acutely difficult to respond to violence in a way that refrains from reaction, causing either subtly or blatantly more violence.8 The Holy Spirit is our advocate, so we can take refuge in the Soul of our soul. Sometimes, however, we can’t hear that still, small voice because of our destructive emotions. The next chapter is my own story of a protracted bout with the affliction of anger.
